More of the roof to come off now at easter time. The door that can be seen here was where the farmer would pass grain through to store it in this room. We decided to brick (stone) up the lower half and make it into a dormer window.
Good old Nige back for another visit. Helping remove the roof.
Rafters installed and the creation of the dormer using a combination of oak and pine.
Surveying the land after the rear part of the roof was off. Note the partially slated roof from the year before. We couldn't slate any further until the second part of the roof was replaced.
The rear of the property faces out onto someone else's land and there is a restriction on putting windows in that face onto this land. We have overcome the light issues in the upstairs rooms by installing high velux windows that can't be viewed out of.
The inside of the 'utility room'. My wife Mandy installing some plasterboard around the window, whilst I take on a supervisory role.
Now that the second stage of the roof was replaced we could carry on slating.
Here you can see that the lower part of what was the door to the grain store has been built up and a sill put in place.
It was level, honest. I think it was a crooked photo.
Nige hates this photo - mainly because it has been said that he never normally bites his nails.
New slates on a new flat roof, I am quite proud of this. Self taught on most things, it looks quite good.
A new high velux on the back of the house allows light in but prevents from overlooking the neighbouring land.
High mounted velux seen from the inside. That is the beam I kept hitting my head on. I am used to it being there now so collision is less frequent.
We have found that the best value windows can be purchased from Lapeyre (See links). These are oak units with 4-16-4 double glazing. This one cost around £120
Notice the use of a hard hat - it is not because Mandy's dad is sat above me, nor because we were on a building site, it was because each time I went into the room I kept banging my head on the low beams.
